The song I chose for this assignment is a song by Kid Cudi. “Mr. Rager” (2010). I believe this fits the theme of this class because it has the word heaven in it. I heard this song from a good friend of mine and when I was assigned this assignment, this song was the first song that came to mind. While reading the lyrics to this song, I found that I was imagining a lot of interesting things that made me want to find out the symbols of some of the important words that stood out to me. In this blog, I will be exploring the denotation (definition) and connotation (meaning of symbols in a poem) of the lyrics to this famous song.
The song starts off with “I'm off on a adventure... “Right there I can see a word that stood out to me which was adventure the definition of adventure is a wild and exciting undertaking. The connotation of adventure in my opinion is mind exploring. I thought of mind exploring because an adventure usually starts off in the mind. “I’m on my way to heaven” Heaven is defined as the abode of God and the angels. The connotation of heaven would be peace. “Birds seen flying around...” Bird, is a warm- blooded egg- laying vertebrates characterized by feathers and forelimbs modified as wings. Connotation definition would be exploration. Fantasy: imagination unrestricted by reality. The symbolism of fantasy would be fairy tales. Story: a piece of fiction that narrates a chain of related events. When the word story comes to mind I usually think of imagination. Considering all of the symbolism in this song I will be interpreting the meaning of “Mr. Rager”.
When I first heard this song I was thinking about someone who is getting high. Now that I broke the song down I know see that the meaning of this song in my opinion. I see a person who is exploring and enjoying his adventurous life. When he’s back on the ground (symbolic for earth) he’s not as adventurous. He’s actually not himself at all. People will always wonder where he is going in life and wonder if he will make it. This song is an inspiration to encourage people not to take advantage of what they have and to live life to the fullest.
